Something Slimey This Way Comes...This month in Science we have been learning about mixtures, materials and mixing substances and different materials. Firstly we looked at the changing states of water: from a solid to a liquid and to a gas and then how that can go in reverse. We examined the reaction between water and oil and what happens to these liquids when mixed (or not mixed) together in a bottle. Lastly, the highlight of the month was when we got to make slime. We looked at the various materials needed to make the slime and examined its properties. We questioned what might happen when we mixed some of the materials together. We added materials together step by step so we could look at the creation of the slime and what happens to the mixture every time we added something else to it. When we reached the final step the slime was made but the children noticed they needed to add more of the ingredients to help the slime keep its texture. The entire investigation was a hit with everyone ***Also to add I take no responsibility for what the children did with the slime once they brought it home. I had intended for it to be binned but they wore me down to bring home.*** Mouths were fed, Nutella was spread and marshmallows were had too! Everyone enjoyed the pancakes today and you'd think some had never had a pancake before!!!! GAA with ImeldaThe children have been enjoying their GAA sessions with Imelda this year. The children have show great progression in their GAA skills and I think the future of football and hurling in KK na d Offaly is going to be bright in the years to come!!! Science in the school yardOver the past number of week the children have been leaning about soils in the environment. We learned about the different types of soils in the environment and in the different parts of the world. We also looked at how important soil is in the world, What it is used for. Then at the end of the topic we went out and explored the school yard and looked at the soils around the local environment. Putting what we learned in the classroom into focus and practise in the real world of the local school yard. Merry Christmas from the Middle RoomAnd a big thank you to Tom Doolan for the lovely Christmas treats. You are far too good to the children! Christmas Village
Over the past month the children in the Middle Room have been busy becoming engineers and architects! We have built our own mini-Christmas Village!
From the construction to the design to the painting and the adding of decoration to them, the houses turned out so well and colourful! It has really put us all in the Christmas mood! Addition and Multiplication TablesThe children have been working really hard at learning their tables each week and we use the cubes to help us visualise the sum. 2nd Class worked in pairs to practise their addition of 8 tables while 3rd class, having just started focusing on multiplication tables, were practising multiplication of 2, 4 and 8 tables. |
