Working for our 3rd Green Schools Flag - Water

As part of our work on our 3rd Green Schools Flag, which focuses on water,  we took part in a workshop on water conservation. We learned about each person's responsibility to save water.
Coolanarney Awarded First Ever Green Schools Flag!

This year in Coolanarney we have been working very hard to obtain our first Green Schools Flag. Our theme for the year was Litter and Waste.  All children from Junior Infants to 6th Class were responsible for their own rubbish and knew whether to put it into the rubbish bin or the recycling bin. We were determined to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

In April 2013, in preparation for our task, we did a litter survey to identify the litter black spots around the school. We then had a clean up day where all children helped to clean up the school, eliminate all the rubbish and start afresh!

Following on from this, our Green Schools Committee introduced an Action Plan for us to follow, to ensure success in achieving our flag.

We had litter wardens during break times whose job it was to check around the yard for any rubbish and they were very diligent with this responsibility!
Our 1st Class were in charge of emptying the bins at the end of every day. This meant checking the bins in all classrooms to make sure each class were using them correctly and then emptying them into the big bins outside.
We made up our own Green School Code "Pick it up, Pop it in, 'Coz Coolanarney Want to Win!"
Upon implementing this programme, we saw a massive reduction in the amount of rubbish found around the school yard and even the bins were only half full. We had several visits from Orla Fogarty who came to see if we were making significant efforts to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. She was very impressed with the children's knowledge and their dedication to the task and she was more than happy to recommend that we be awarded our first Green Flag!

We must give a special mention to our excellent Green Schools Committee this year who worked very hard to help Ms. Mahon, our Green Schools Coordinator, organise and implement all of the new plans.
