Proclamation Day 2016

On Tuesday 15th of March, we held a ceremony here in Coolanarney to celebrate the centenary of the 1916 rising. Children from Junior Infants to 6th class took part in the celebration. Children, staff and parents gathered in Mrs. Lynch's room where Irish songs were sung and poems were recited. The events of the 1916 rising were recalled by 3rd and 4th class students and the senior room gave fantastic accounts of each leader in the rising.
After this, we all congregated outside for the raising of the flag. Robert and Dylan, brothers here in the school, had the honour of raising the tricolour because their ancestor, Harry 'Robert' Walpole, was the man who raised the Irish Republic flag outside the GPO one hundred years ago. It was very fitting for the boys to raise the flag and a proud day for their family.
Once the tricolour was raised, we all sang our national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.

Many thanks to Marie Gleeson for capturing the event and providing us with the photos to use on our website.
