Offaly's Fittest Schools
In May, we were visited by the trainers with Offaly Sports Partnership as we were taking part in the Offaly's Fittest Schools testing programme. The children from 1st to 6th class were tested on speed and endurance and compared to other schools in county Offaly.
We were delighted to be informed in June that our 3rd class boys were deemed the fittest boys in County Offaly and the fittest girl in 3rd class in county Offaly is Ciara Nugent. The fittest girl in 4th class in County Offaly is Sarah Costello and the fittest girl in 6th class in County Offaly is Emily Whelehan, all pupils in our school. Well done all! We are very proud of you.

Cumann na mBunscol Medal Presentation Evening
A presentation night was held in Mountbolus Hall on Tuesday the 20th of June to present the victorious Killoughey Schools Hurling and Camogie teams with their Cumann na mBunscol medals.
There was a great turn out from parents, families, friends and staff from the three schools involved and it was a lovely way to celebrate the children's achievements.
Lorraine Keena, a Kilcormac Killoughey camogie player and vice-captain of the Offaly Senior Camogie team presented the girls with their medals and congratulated them on their victory. She encouraged them to keep playing the game and looks forward to playing alongside them in the coming years.
Cillian Kiely, current K/K and Offaly Senior Hurler and Stephen Byrne, current K/K senior manager and former Offaly goalkeepr and All-Star Award winner presented the boys with their medals. Stephen also spoke passionately to the children about the importance and value of their win to the parish as a whole. We would like to thank Lorraine, Stephen and Cillian for giving up their time to present the medals to the children and for being such great role models for our students.
We would like to thank Pauline Kilmartin for looking after the catering once again and anyone else who helped out with the organising of the night in any way.
Many thanks to Frances Keating and Donal Rigney for looking after the camogie team and also Seamus Spain and Shane Hand for taking care of the boys.
Sincere thanks to Damien White for acting as MC on the evening.
Finally, a special congratulations again to the children involved, especially our own girls Sarah, Lucy, Isabella, Jiani and Áine and to our boys Daniel, Adam, Ultan, Dean and Stephen.
Cumann na mBunscol Winners!
We would like to congratulate all the boys and girls from Coolanarney NS that took part in the Cumann na mBunscol hurling and camogie finals in St. Brendan's Park, Birr on Tuesday 23rd of May.
Gortnamona, Mountbolus and ourselves combined to enter a hurling and camogie team and both teams were rewarded with silverware at the end of two very enjoyable matches. The camogie team defeated a very well balanced Mercy Primary School from Birr and the boys had to dig deep to claim victory in their match against the Birr Boy's School.
The level of skill and tenacity on show during both finals was extremely admirable. The hooking and blocking we witnessed was a testament to the attitude and character of the players and both teams were very deserving victors on the day.
We would like to thank Frances Keating and Donal Rigney for training the camogie team. We appreciate the time it takes after school to prepare the girls for days like this and we are grateful for all your hard work.
A sincere thanks to Seamus Spain and anyone else who took charge of the boys this year. The way the boys played on the day of the final was a true reflection on the time and work that has gone into preparing them over the past number of months.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the families and friends who came out in numbers to support the teams and help them over the line. It is greatly appreciated by all here in Coolanarney.
Congratulations again and we hope you all enjoyed the celebrations!

Cumann na mBunscoil Finals May 2016
Coolanarney teamed up with Gortnamona and Mountbolus National Schools to form a Killoughey Schools team in both hurling and camogie. Both teams did extremely well throughout the group stages of the competition and proceeded to the finals in St. Brendan's Park, Birr on Wednesday 25th May.
Our girls played really well against a very strong Killeigh team and were unfortunate to be on the losing side at the end. They never gave in and fought hard right up until the final whistle and this determination and commitment did not go unnoticed. We are very proud of all the girls, especially Grace and Sarah who represented Coolanarney so well on the day. Many thanks to Frances Keating and Donal Rigney for taking the time to train and prepare these girls so well.
Congratulations to our boys team who defeated Clara BNS in the hurling competition. We were winning comfortably at half time and looked firmly in control of the game, However, Clara were a changed team in the second half and got things back to within a couple of points. This made for a very exciting finish to the final! Nevertheless, the boys showed their skill and composure to see out the game and emerge victorious. Congratulations to Charlie who captained the side and accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, and to Robert, Ryan, Adam.S, Daniel and Dean who were also fantastic representatives of the school. Well done boys! A special mention must go to Seamus Spain for the time and effort he put into training the team for this competition. It is all very much appreciated.

FAI Primary Schools 5-a-side
A boys and a girls team from the school were entered into the FAI Primary Schools 5-a-side competition. On March 8th, they set off for Tullamore for the first round of matches. On the day, the boys played four matches against Killeen A and B, Carrig NS and Cloneygowan NS. They played really well and won three out of the four matches and this allowed them to proceed onto the next stage of the competition. The girls played three matches on the day against Carrig and the Educate Together National School who they defeated. They had to meet the Educate Together team again later to decide who would go through to the next round and that match ended 5-1 in our favour.
This meant that on April 15th, the boys and girls set off again, only this time for Portaoise to compete in the Mid Leinster Finals. Both the boys and the girls came up against strong opposition from schools in Laois, Kildare and Kilkenny. Both school teams acquitted themselves excellently and represented the school with great pride. Unfortunately on the day we did not come out as winners but the children had two great days out and learned a lot from the experience.
A special thanks to Mrs. Gath for taking them to the games on both days and for all her hard work in preparing the team.

Cúl an Áirne Abú!!
Once again, our 5th and 6th class pupils took part in the Cumann na mBunscol football competition this year. We had four games to play over the course of a few weeks. We played Rashina N.S, Clareen N.S, Rath N.S and Mountbolus N.S. We played very well in all of our games and trained very hard during our lunch times in school. We ended up in the final on Thursday 22nd of October in St. Brendan's Park, Birr against a fantastic Mountbolus side.
It was a very exciting and competitive final and we were delighted to come out on top in the end on a scoreline of 3-8 to 2-7.
Everyone enjoyed the meal in Tom Doolan's after the match and we would like to thank Tom and his staff for looking after us so well once again.
The pupils and staff here in Coolanarney are very proud of all the boys and girls for the effort they put in since September.
We would like to sincerely thank all the parents who provided transport to the matches and to everyone who turned out on the day of the final to support the boys and girls. It is much appreciated!
We look forward to the medal presentation which will come at a later date!

Indoor Hurling Success
In April of this year, our fifth and sixth class students travelled to St. Mary's Youth Centre, Tullamore with the aim of claiming their second consecutive indoor hurling trophy.
Our opponents on the day were Broughall N.S and Pullough N.S. We were able to field two teams and so everyone got plenty of game time. Each team got to play each other once and the top two teams played in the final. This turned out to be ourselves and Broughall. In a closely contested final, it was Coolanarney who edged it in the end.
All students gave a great account of themselves and played brilliantly on the day!
Our Captain for the day, Scott Bradley was presented with the trophy by Offaly Games Promotion Officer, John Leahy.
Well done to all the children who took part! Cúl an Áirne Abú!!

Cumann na mBunscoil
Once again, our fifth and sixth class pupils took part in the Cumann na mBunscoil Competition. The football competition started right after school began in September. All the boys and girls were very eager to get training and Mrs. Gath was putting them through their paces at lunch time and preparing them well!
We had to play several schools and hope to finish in the top two to make the final in St. Brendan's Park, Birr. We played against Gortnamóna N.S, Kinnitty N.S, Scoil Mhuire agus Chormaic, Kilcormac and Ballyboy N.S. Many of these games were very well contested and very entertaining to watch.
We won all our matches and finished top of the group, with Ballyboy finishing second meaning that they would be our opponents in St. Brendan's Park, Birr at the end of October.
Unfortunately, on the day things didn't go our way and we lost a very exciting and well contested final to a very good Ballyboy team.
We are so proud of all the children and the work they put in during the competition. The skill level of the Coolanarney players throughout the whole tournament must be mentioned as it was most impressive. Their teamwork and team spirit was also a joy to see.
